BeyondTheory Logistics was formed as an answer to the frustrations expressed by customers and manufacturers of products in the commercial janitorial industry. Customers formed buying groups (GPOs) in healthcare and state governments to negotiate lower product prices for all of their members. In response, distributors formed their own marketing and buying groups to sell to the GPOs and consolidate their buying power with manufacturers. Manufacturers developed their own customer-direct sales teams to ensure their “brand equity,” and value was accurately conveyed to the end customer. The inevitable response was for IT people to automate the buying process through “online auctions/procurement.”
All of these efforts were product-focused and missed some of the obvious and significant opportunities for gains in improved processes. BTL leadership, knowing the best practices in retail, manufacturing, and 3PL distribution, realized those same proven principals could be applied to the commercial janitorial, personal protection, and disposable food service industries. Knowing the history of the status quo has enabled us to identify what is wrong and how to fix it.
